Qualification standards for career practitioners

This chapter aims to discuss background contexts and contemporary issues associated with qualification standards for career practitioners. The author begins with a review of changes in the field of career development that have driven national and international initiatives to design and implement qualification standards. The proposed benefits of standards of practice for practitioners and some of the difficulties in developing and managing standards are examined. Recent initiatives to develop international standards are described. Cultural diversity and social justice are highlighted to propose how qualification standards can be used to facilitate positive changes for customers of career development services. The final section of the chapter summarises key areas for future consideration in the development of standards, using examples of standards and guidelines from several countries.
