Branching out: a guide for workplace trainers in the Australian forest and forest products industry

The kit has been designed and developed to facilitate the effective delivery of industry based training using Training Packages for workplace trainers, assessors, training providers, employers and unions in forestry industries. This resource has been developed by Mary Adams (ALIO, TAFE NSW) in association with a number of literacy/numeracy consultants and forestry industry personnel. It details the responsibilities of workplace trainers in ensuring that all workers are able to access training that enables them to achieve the required competencies, and gives suggestions as to how this can be achieved. Included in the resource is information about Training Packages and explanations of their endorsed and non endorsed components. The text also includes valuable information on how to think about language, literacy and numeracy in the workplace and how features of language, literacy and numeracy can be considered and integrated within industry training packages. Section three is concerned with the preparation and delivery of effective training. It details how to prepare for training through the conduct of needs analysis, and then goes on to highlight aspects that need to be considered (resources, equipment, space etc.), and gives trainers a format for developing cohesive and effective learning activities. The fourth section deals with issues of assessment as they relate to workplace training, e.g. who can assess, and what evidence can or might be used in the conduct of assessment. This section also gives workplace trainers some dos and don'ts of how to assess. The final section details a range of key contact services, as well as further industry and associated industry resources that may be useful to trainers in the development of their site specific training program.
