This report provides summary findings of a survey of students who completed bachelor degree and associate diploma courses in 1995 from Victorian universities and TAFE institutes. Presented are descriptions of the data collected, grouped around the areas of: (i) current labour market and study activities; (ii) characteristics of the jobs of those employed and the extent to which recent graduates utilised the skills and knowledge developed; (iii) finding out what graduates who were not employed were doing and to what factors those who were seeking work attributed their lack of success; and (iv) identifying graduate views about the cognitive and vocational skills they developed during their courses. This study looks at the yearly tracking of Victorian Year 12 students who are enrolled in VET in Schools subjects and their post-schooling destinations. It reports on the destinations of 1997 students in their second year out of school. One of the findings is that more than half of the students from 1997 are still studying, including those undertaking apprenticeships and traineeships. High progression rates through tertiary courses and successful transitions from study to work on completion of courses were also noted in 1999. As well there was a marked increase in the proportion of the 1997 exit school leavers in full-time work; one in five were fully employed. Show less

This report draws on data from the Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) Longitudinal Study of Learners in Pre-accredited Courses in Victoria. The report, which is based largely on the cohort of 2011, turns the spotlight on work-related reasons for study and work-related outcomes. This focus is important because many of the men and women who enrol in pre-accredited courses are economically vulnerable. They are often in relatively insecure situations within the labour market (under-employed, unemployed, or workforce-inactive, even while studying for work reasons). In addition, they commonly have low levels of qualifications (or none) and incomplete schooling. Pre-accredited courses offer a pathway to reverse the disadvantages of limited education and precariousness in the labour market.

Successive Year 12 cohorts of ‘VET in schools’ graduates have been tracked since the inception of the program in 1994. In recent years, this has been extended to include the tracking of samples of ‘mainstream’ [Victorian Certificate of Education] VCE students and, since 2003, the entire Year 12 cohorts of VCE and [Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning] VCAL students have been tracked through the On Track survey program conducted by the University of Melbourne for the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD).
This report outlines the destinations of the 2006 cohort, using data from 2005 and 2006 [Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority] VCAA files, as well as data gathered by telephone surveys conducted as part of the On Track program. This report is part of an ongoing study into the implementation of the ‘VET in schools’ program. This study includes the yearly tracking of Year 12 students who are enrolled in VET in Schools units into their post-schooling destinations.

This report is part of an ongoing study into the implementation of the VET in schools program in Victoria. It is the seventh report in a series and documents the variety of study and labour market destinations of the 2000 vocational education and training (VET) in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) graduates. Ninety four per cent of graduates who participated in VET in the VCE programs are making effective transitions to employment, apprenticeships and traineeships and to tertiary education. Over half of the leaving cohort is consistently going on to further study at either a University or a TAFE Institute. Using a comparison of non-VET graduates, the report further examines the relative success of VET in the VCE graduates in their transition to these post school destinations. The range of positive outcomes achieved by students over the past few years is evidence that VET in the VCE has become an important and successful pathway for many students. Show less

In the past, vocational education and training experienced some difficulty making in-roads into Victorian schools. Dual recognition programs allow students to work towards fully credentialled training without forgoing the options of a place in university. These programs offer vocational education within a recognised Year 12 certificate (the Victorian Certificate of Education or VCE) and are undertaken at school, at a TAFE Institute, or in an industry setting. In this article, the authors discuss their ongoing research into dual recognition programs for the Victorian Department of Education. Show less

This document reports on the continuing work in 2004 of the On Track project, the research project initiated for the year 2003 which is attempting to provide alternative measures of the success of schools in securing positive outcomes for their students. The On Track survey is designed to provide a valuable tool for guiding program policies both at the government and school level and at the local or regional level. The data collected in this 2004 study are based on a telephone survey of school leavers in March/April of 2004, and were analysed by the research team in the Centre for Post Compulsory Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of Melbourne. The study found that at this time, 4 out of 5 young Victorians complete secondary school; of the remainder, many begin an apprenticeship, traineeship or other accredited vocational training. This high level of participation in education is taking place in a context in which industry, occupational and labour market changes require an increasing investment of effort in lifelong learning. However, given the complexity of the evolving economic and social environment and the range of different regional settings, no single pattern of destinations can be identified as representing the optimum outcome.

On Track is a Victorian Government initiative which surveys school leavers who have left school in the last six months to find out if they are on track to a bright future. The On Track survey is designed to provide a tool for guiding program policies both at the government and school level and at a local or regional level. On Track ensures school leavers are contacted within six months of leaving school to see if they are on a path to further education, training or employment. It also enables young people to seek further advice and assistance via a referral service if required to get back on track. Data presented in this report are based on a telephone survey of 32,343 Year 12 completers and 4,783 early leavers from the 2005 school year in Victoria.
