This report examines professional military education (PME) in Australia, that is, the career-long process of developing the qualities Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel require as members of the profession of arms. First, it sets out reasons why PME is crucial to Australian security and outlines some recent criticisms of the system. Second, it examines the organisational, personnel and pedagogic challenges that all PME systems must deal with. Third, it analyses the principal institutions that provide PME in Australia, taking note of their strengths and weaknesses. The final section of the report sets out a series of recommendations.
