Community service learning is the name given to the integration of community service into students' courses. Community service learning can be seen as a subset of work-integrated learning. Most universities include service to the community in their mission statements. The purpose of service learning is to help the community while also helping students to gain professional skills that they might need in the future. Industry requires university graduates to be equipped with technical knowledge and also with graduate capabilities/attributes and/or generic skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. This paper explores business students' experience of service learning in the community and investigates the attributes that students report they have achieved from their experience. The research argues that service learning can be used to develop the attributes required by university and for industry. The paper describes how the community service learning subject is offered at Australian Catholic University (ACU) in Melbourne, Australia. A content analysis was undertaken of the students' reflective reports in order to determine the skills that the students recorded that they have developed through their experience. The findings provide insight into the perceptions of students regarding their community engagement experience and how this links to the graduate attributes that the university is trying to develop in students. Billett's framework for effective incorporation of work integrated learning has been used to make recommendations regarding the outcome of community service learning at ACU. Overall, the community service was a positive experience for business students, increasing their confidence and their ability to work with others.

Education for sustainability (EfS) is education which seeks to achieve sustainability, with a particular focus on cultivating knowledge and skills to making a practical, ongoing difference. It comprises environmental, economic and cultural dimensions of sustainability. Australia has a National Action Plan for EfS. For Victoria's universities, it represents a step beyond operational sustainability (e.g. 'campus greening') initiatives and education about sustainability; many advocates view it as something that can be imbued through all educational activities. Many enthusiastic environmentalists have pioneered EfS in Australian universities; the challenge now is to make it mainstream and accessible to newcomers to sustainability as an educational value. This report provides an account of the state of development of EfS in Victoria's universities and is intended to inform government and other agencies and, especially, policy making within universities.

It is anecdotally common knowledge to most hospitality professionals that cooks leave the cooking profession comparatively early. When a cook leaves a kitchen it is normally unplanned, often mid-shift, an apron left crumpled on the floor without it’s wearer to fill it. Data is seldom collected through an exit interview, and therefore their immediate destination is often unknown. Certificate III in Commercial Cookery has prepared the cook with a trade-level, craft-specific skills set, however if they choose to make the transition to a better occupational level of employment, either within or beyond Hospitality, they may find themselves in a changed labour market, one requiring broader, multiple skills sets, and often requiring the motivation to reengage with formal education prior to career improvement. [This] project aimed to identify the factors that affect a cook’s choice to reengage [in] further education.

Skilled facilitation is a key requirement in modern health care as practitioners are expected to innovate within a changing and complex workplace environment. Professional impact and practice based outcomes of an inaugural practice development facilitation Masterclass, for facilitators of practice development activity in Victoria, Australia, is presented. The masterclass format incorporates experiential learning strategies with individual transformation as an explicit goal. The program structure is underpinned by critical social science and delivered through a co-operative inquiry approach. Evidence of personal and professional transformation, identified as a consequence of participation in the Masterclass is reviewed.

This report forms part of a process of ongoing advice to the Victorian Skills Commission from information distilled by Primary Skills Victoria (PSV) Council members and organisations which they represent, and staff on the workforce development and training of the industry sectors under PSV's coverage which includes: agriculture; production horticulture; amenity horticulture; animal care and management; conservation and land management; and sea food and aquaculture. [This report] attempts to explore some of the issues confronting the major sectors as well as many which affect many of the sub-sectors and which tend to slip beneath the radar, but which again affect directly workforce development and thus training demand within each.
In summary the key findings that translate across most sectors include the following: recruitment and retention of labour across most industry sectors is proving problematic and in some instances impacting on productivity; in some sectors [registered training organisations] RTOs are seen to lack the skills or desire to provide technical training demanded by industry and limiting access to training to meet the need of industry; [and] the potential impact of the Skills for Growth strategy is seen by those sectors recruiting labour with higher non-vocational qualifications as being detrimental to their training policy.

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to explore business students' views about using e-portfolios at Victoria University (VU) in Melbourne. It also examines the extent to which students present e-portfolios to prospective employers in applying for jobs. Design/methodology/approach - This paper draws on the literature on e-portfolio use and the role of e-portfolios in the recruitment process together with results from an online survey of professional development students about the use of e-portfolios and the PebblePad platform. Findings - An analysis of online responses examines student views about the usefulness of e-portfolios, the PebblePad platform, and the relevance of an e-portfolio assessment task. The findings suggest that few students use or expect to use e-portfolios beyond the assessment requirements and highlight students' polarised views about the usefulness of PebblePad. Research limitations/implications - VU's Business Faculty needs to adopt a whole-of-course approach to embedding e-portfolios in the curriculum. Practical implications - At VU, e-portfolios are promoted to students as a personal learning system and as a creative means of communicating their employability skills. The findings suggest a need to review how e-portfolios are used, promoted and assessed in VU's programs.
