In recent years there has been increased recognition of the importance of education and training in Australia's program of economic and industrial reform. Members of the workforce need work-related English language and literacy skills to take advantage of the focus on education and training. Therefore it is crucial that adult literacy and basic education (ALBE) workplace trainers are available to ensure that English language, literacy and numeracy education take a central role in the Training Reform Agenda. In 1992 the TAFE National Staff Development Committee researched and published 'A Draft National Framework for Professional Development of Adult literacy and Basic Education Personnel' (the Framework), providing a plan for meeting the needs of ALBE personnel which they had identified in a 1991 survey of the ALBE field.

In response to the Framework, a 1992 project undertook to address Objective 4 (To increase the competencies of ALBE personnel so that they can respond effectively to a broad range of learning situations or contexts), in particular the newer learning/teaching context for ALBE personnel - the workplace. This material is the resulting product and takes account of the aim and the five objectives of The Framework and exemplifies the thirteen principles of professional development that the Framework enunciated. It is therefore an important part of the overall plan to meet the needs of ALBE personnel, as well as having special significance for those who are preparing to take programs to the workforce.

This learning activities material has been developed for use within the module 'Communications and industrial relations'. Many of the activities have been designed for the student to work through with a partner. The purpose of this module is to assist the student to communicate more effectively, both orally and in the written form, with an emphasis on the vocational and workplace environment.
