This book examines social dialogue and the role of social partners in the governance of the world of work in 34 European countries. Actors in the world of work are facing an increasing number of challenges, including automatization and digitalization, new types of jobs and more diverse forms of employment. Through interviews, surveys and examples of best practice, the volume provides evidence on how social dialogue can meet these challenges, how the social partners can become stranger and more representative, and what role they and social dialogue can play regarding digitalization. The volume also addresses demographic change, migration flows, global supply chain management and environmental objectives.

From an international and comparative perspective, young people's access to the labour market is a complex issue with certain contradictory aspects reflecting the level of development of labour law and industrial relations in their respective countries. The papers in this volume aim at providing insights into this issue, taking as a starting point initiatives, policies and legislative measures adopted in different national contexts to tackle youth unemployment.

Most chapters in this publication were presented at the Association for International and Comparative Studies in Labour Law and Industrial Relations (ADAPT) conference held at the University of Bergamo, Italy, on 16-17 December 2010. The international conference, 'Productivity, investment in human capital and the challenge of youth employment: comparative developments and global responses', was dedicated to the challenge of youth employment and aimed at achieving a better understanding of the issue in a global dimension through an interdisciplinary and comparative approach.

The financial crisis that erupted during the late 1990s in East and South East Asia had serious consequences for workers throughout the region. Unemployment rose, earnings fell and working conditions were threatened. Over two years after the beginning of the crisis, evidence of macroeconomic stabilisation and recovery in the region has emerged. However, large numbers of workers in the region are still experiencing social and economic hardship. In 1998, the World Bank and the International Labour Organization (ILO) collaborated to explore strategies for supporting governments, employers and workers in the region as they respond to these difficult social and economic conditions. This joint project involved the preparation of five country papers (Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand) analysing the labour market aspects of the crisis. These papers were used as the basis of a workshop held in Tokyo in October 1999. This book includes the country reports and the international policy papers prepared for the workshop. Renewing workers' education focuses on educational forms created by workers for workers. It extends beyond trade unions to include the range of educational initiatives aimed at the working class more generally, including working class women, casual and informal sector workers, migrant workers, and workers' political parties. This book contributes to filling the gap in the South African literature on workers' education and documents the more recent history of workers' education as well as current practices and perspectives, including some international experiences. It explores conceptual tools that may assist in reflecting on and theorising the practice of workers' education and analyses current challenges. This book also seeks to inform future policy and practices on workers' education and is key for those who wish to reinvigorate and contribute to building an alternative future for workers' education.

Debates on the future of work have taken a more fundamental turn in the wake of the [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 pandemic. Early in 2020, when large sections of the workforce were prevented from coming to their usual places of work, remote work became the only way for many to continue to perform their professions. What had been a piecemeal, at times truly sluggish, evolution towards a multilocation approach to work suddenly turned into an abrupt, radical and universal shift. It quickly became clear that the consequences of this shift were far more significant and far-reaching than simply changing the workplace's address. They involved a series of rapid, blockbuster transformations that were going to outlast the 'mandatory lockdown' phase of the pandemic.

The 12 chapters collected in this volume provide a multidisciplinary perspective on the impact and the future trajectories of remote work. They raise, discuss and explore fundamental questions emerging around remote work: from the nexus between the location from where work is performed and how it is performed to how remote locations may affect the way work is managed and organised, as well as the applicability of existing legislation. Additional questions concern remote work's environmental and social impact and the rapidly changing nature of the relationship between work and life.

The contributions in this edited volume develop along several complementary axes, ranging from the discussion of global and societal dynamics to the implications for the contractual relationship between employers and workers. The transformation of the spatial component of work is considered both as a potential paradigm shift for the world of work and as a challenge for the implementation of specific regulatory regimes. An important insight that emerges from the multidimensional approach of this volume is that the establishment of a worker centred future of (remote) work requires the exploration and development of constructive pathways at different levels and in different directions involving the role of regulators, courts, trade unions, researchers, businesses and workers themselves.

Labour market institutions shape the behaviour of firms and workers, and are a precondition for the efficient functioning of labour market systems.
