Work based learning (WBL) is defined as an approach to development that makes the most of the learning opportunities available to individuals at, from and through their real life work situations. WBL consists of:
performing tasks and
learning from reflecting on the task.
A learning facilitator is an integral part of WBL programs. The role of a learning facilitator is to act as learning mentor to one or more program participants. The responsibilities of the facilitator include:
analysing the participants developmental needs and aspirations,
providing participants with models of learning behaviour,
providing feedback on performance, accomplishments and difficulties being encountered, and,
giving learning equal billing with tasks during WBL activities and projects.
The booklet includes case studies, a suggested model for establishing a WBL program and a list of further resources.
