Two reports on agricultural education, the Legislative Council Select Committee (Bell Report) and the Minister for Education's Advisory Council (Barrett-Lennard Report), both identified deficiencies in the agricultural schools of Western Australia and recommended they be removed from the Schools Directorate and administered differently. The Bell report recommended that the agricultural schools be transferred to the office of TAFE and stated that these school compared unfavourably with similar colleges in other states. It recommended that the Ministry of Education of the Office of TAFE examine interstate courses with a view to improving the courses offered in this state. The author found that some aspects of Western Australian programmes compared favourably with their counterparts in other states. Some features of institutions visited could be adapted to improve agricultural schools in WA. The major constraint of WA schools is that they are largely restricted to offering full time programmes to secondary school age students.
