The first article in this issue's special report on teaching in partnership with industry, describes how the TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute became responsible for the training of 13 worker trainees of the Clarence River Fisherman's Co-Operative as well as developing a number of training activities for fishers with the main emphasis on health and safety, food hygiene and communication skills.

After the development of a training plan, every worker trainee was visited and a team approach was established. The majority of the training was carried out by TAFE NSW teachers alongside the Co-Operative Quality Insurance Manager. Some of the training was carried out by other trainers who were brought in specifically because of their involvement in quality assurance in the food industry. Workplace assessment consisted of interviews, demonstrations of work practices, projects or assignments and roleplay activities. The aim is to have the trainees complete Certificate III in Seafood Industry (Sales and Distribution) by the end of 2003.
