In this paper, the author draws attention to the theme of corporate social responsibility now popular in American political debate. As workers become increasingly disadvantaged in the current economic climate, the notion is emerging that employers should bear some responsibility for the quality of life of their employees and the wider community. However, the author argues that a corporate morality is yet to emerge, as organisations are a product of the culture within which they exist where worker education has focused on short-term, work-related training designed to enhance productivity rather than the development of the individual or the community. Any existing examples of institutional responsibility in the shape of local worker education projects are a product of the morality of key individuals within the institution. This article presents one such example situated in a large, urban, public university in southeastern United States.
