Socioeconomic status (SES) refers to an economic and sociological measure of an individual’s work experience, economic status and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation. Low-SES can contribute to low literacy, numeracy and educational achievement whilst education systems in low SES communities may struggle with resourcing and staffing issues. Financial constraints can also cause feelings of not belonging in school, emotional stress, depression, and intentions to drop out before graduation. Factors that improve the quality of education in low-SES communities include improved teaching and learning, creating information-rich environments, building learning communities, continuous professional development, parent involvement, and increased funding and resources.
