This chapter looks at the research related to the effectiveness of career guidance programs with an emphasis on evaluating different types of interventions. The first part of the chapter examines the overall effectiveness of career guidance interventions and programs and provides a summary of some research into career outcomes from different countries. The authors also discuss the effectiveness of different program methods, e.g. individual, group or career course) and computer or internet-based systems. The chapter concludes with recommendations for further research and evaluative studies and suggestions as to how practitioners can work with researchers to enhance the overall quality of the evaluation of career guidance programs.

School-to-careers services and experiences have been described as important in providing a reason for students to remain in school as well as to be ready for life after high school. These researchers examined the information collected in Nevada, a state that has high student dropout rates in general, to determine if there were differences in the school-to-careers services and experiences offered at schools with high versus low dropout rates. The data did show differences in certain experiences and the researchers make recommendations for further analysis as a result of their findings.
