Australia has traditionally been a resource-based economy and, for many years, maintained a high standard of living based on exports of commodities. However, in the last several decades, manufacturing and services have overtaken commodities in world trade, and the terms of trade have turned against Australia. It is in a difficult position as it tries to maintain its traditional strengths in commodities and yet develop new technology-intensive industries with limited resources of trained persons and funding. Engineering plays a vital role in the change process and new approaches to engineering education are vital for developing the international competitiveness of the country.
