This paper presents the outcomes of a study examining the value and impact of vocational education and training (VET) research in Australia. The existence and extent of the influence that contact or exposure to VET research had on a selection of VET stakeholders was investigated in order to assess its impact. The study participants were chosen to represent four sectors of stakeholders: (1) industry, i.e. those working as human resource managers in industry training advisory boards or councils; (2) policy, i.e. those involved in developing or implementing policy at state or national levels; (3) advocacy, i.e. those people serving on taskforces and VET advisory groups; and (4) research, i.e. those directly or indirectly involved in undertaking VET research. Four aspects of the stakeholders' perception of VET research were examined: (1) their awareness of VET research; (2) the extent to which they were engaged with it, i.e. reading, discussion, attending conferences and seminars; (3) the amount of use they considered that they made of VET research; and (4) their overall opinion of VET research. Results demonstrated a high level of awareness of, and engagement with, VET research consistently across all four sectors. The results also indicated that the level of application/use of VET research is high and that the presence of judgement in relation to the research is high. Overall, the outcomes demonstrate a high level of influence/effect for VET research across these groups of stakeholders. Show less
