This report covers the activities of an evaluation project on several aspects of the New Apprenticeship Training and Assessment System, from initial development in 1986 to full implementation across the industry in January 1990. The evaluation study has reinforced the view that NATAS is generally supported by industry. Further developments would need to be considered in line with current award restructuring activities. The issue of standards definition is a crucial one and NATAS as a competency based training system must address this as a matter of urgency. This report was prepared by the Commonwealth/State Joint Project Team (Peter Han and Helen Turner) and incorporates a summary of the evaluation study of the monitoring and validation procedures in NATAS by John Williamson, Ric Lowe and Ian Boyd.
