The development of a work-based learning program as a means of recognising, creating and applying knowledge through and for work rather than simply at work challenges the position of universities as sole validators and evaluators of high level knowledge. Work-based learning challenges the intellectual dominance of the universities by demonstrating alternative and equally valid ways to acquire and exhibit high level learning. The aim of this paper is to explore the implications of the Middlesex University approach for the understanding of work-based learning and the role of universities in knowledge creation, recognition and use.
