Skills sets are single units or combinations of units relating to a license, regulatory requirement, or defined industry need. Nationally endorsed skill sets provide formal training recognition for discrete portions of a qualification; linking to a wide range of functions and roles within occupations. In this way, skill sets provide accredited training for specific skills or knowledge without students needing to complete full qualifications.
In Australia prior to 2007, students who did not complete a full qualification could only receive a Statement of Attainment for each unit completed, without any indication of whether the units selected met a defined industry need or licensing/regulatory requirement. From 2007 skill sets complement full qualifications within the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and are included in training packages.
